Of all the tagua carvings, it was the hummingbirds that first caught our attention! Tagua is an extremely hard seed produced from palm trees in the genus Phytelephas, which are native to Central and South America. Sustainably harvested from their rainforest home, these are carved by indigenous artisans of the Wounaan ethnic group in eastern Panama. Most carvings are signed by the artist, and the price is reflective of the time that it takes to produce each handcrafted work of art. As more tagua are sold, these Wounaan families are able to better preserve, protect, and restore their rainforest home for future generations to appreciate.
